IE9 will not support Windows XP
Microsoft seems to cut Windows XP off permanently in steps even when the users won’t stop using it. According to Microsoft, the latest version of internet explorer will not support Windows XP.
Although the Operating System is a decade old, it is still so popular among the users. In fact, the Windows IE9 Platform Preview and the final version won’t run on anything but the latest Microsoft operating systems. Users trying to run the preview code on an XP system will receive the following dialogue box: “Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows Vista SP2.”
The latest addition to the list of Microsoft’s browsers will only run on the latest versions of its OS. Even the OS of Mac and Linux will not be supported by IE9. The IE General Manager says that Mac and Linux versions weren’t even in the company’s plans.
IE9 doesn’t work with Windows XP because of a feature of DirectX, Direct2D, that it uses while accessing the graphics hardware to accelerate image creation and drawing. Initially introduced to Windows 7, the feature was eventually added to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 R2. However, it wasn’t added to Windows XP.
Microsoft confirmed that Windows XP was not on the cards, saying that Windows XP already had a safe, reliable and private browser in Internet Explorer 8.
The company obviously no wants its users to switch from Windows XP to later versions, and finally to Windows 7 as soon as possible. They don’t seem to waste their time on a software that was developed almost ten years ago.
Myspace Revamps in the hope of surviving
Google seems to be taking over the social networking sector with Buzz. Facebook, Twitter too aren’t way behind in the competition either. The only social networking site that is not doing as well is MySpace , the one that started the trend. Although the company has had a tough year, the new co-presidents are trying to change all that by changing the look. There new Mantra, “Discover and be discovered”.
The co-presidents, Jason Hirschhorn and Mike Jones announced their plan to revamp the former social-networking giant and come up with a brand new version of the site. Hirschhorn wants the site to grow from 100 million users to 200 or 300 million users (Facebook boasts over 400 million active users, according to its website). Hirschhorn did not give an expected timeframe for said growth. MySpace has had a tough year so far — Chief Executive Officer Owen Van Natta resigned in February 2010 (reportedly, after numerous clashes with News Corp’s head of digital media — and former AOL CEO — Jon Miller), just ten months after former MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe stepped down.
The new site will mainly focus on the media aspects, the music, movies, etc and will enable the users to share their playlists with others. Last month, new user homepages were released and are less cluttered than the ones before these. Other improvements include updates to high-profile celebrity pages, such as Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie, so the pages have more information and are easier to navigate; improvements to the gaming channel via a partnership with Playdom; and synced Twitter and MySpace services.
Estimates confirm that ad spending on MySpace will fall 21 percent this year to $385 million worldwide, despite the revamp. By contrast, Facebook is expected to bring in between $700 million and $1.1 billion, according to analysts. The $900 million shared advertising revenue deal that MySpace has with Google also expires this August — which could be another hit to MySpace, unless the deal is renewed.
Although the efforts made by MySpace is clearly visible, let’s see if they can really catch up again.
