UP HAJ COMMITEE DEMANDS INCREASE IN THE PILGRIM QUOTA
The Uttar Pradesh Hajj Committee has asked the Central Hajj Committee of India to increase the state quota for the hajj pilgrims as the number of people applying for the pilgrimage to Mecca every year has increased. This demand was put forth to the central committee by the state committee secretary M. A. A. Khan.
Khan alleged that the number of applications to the pilgrimage has been increasing every year.63, 141 applications were received by the state committee and 27,378 applications were selected randomly of these. He added that the passengers will be boarded in three places namely Delhi, Varanasi and Lucknow.
The government of Saudi has permitted 160,000 pilgrims from India this year. Of these, 104,000 will be sent by the Central Hajj Committee of India and the rest will be sent by the private tourist firms.

Hajj refers to a pilgrimage to Mecca and it is the largest pilgrimage in the world occurring every year. The pilgrimage dates are scheduled according to the lunar calendar and falls on the twelfth month of it. In Gregorian calendar, the dates keep changing every year. The pilgrims from allover the world perform a series of rituals during the hajj week.
