SCIENTIFIC TECHNOLOGY TO DETECT CHEMICAL WEAPONS INSTANTLY
A new scientific technology is being developed by the Canadian scientists at Queen’s University, Belfast for detecting the chemical weapons and illegal drugs that are used by terrorists and other anti-social elements. This technology helps in fighting against the terror attacks that involve advanced technology by using chemical weapons.
WORKING PRINCIPLE;
This technology involves special gel pads with which the suspected individuals and crime scene are swiped for the gathering of sample. This gathered sample is then analyzed by scanners for finding the presence of chemicals. The main advantage of this technique is that all these can be done in few seconds.
This scanner uses a well-known principle named “Raman Spectroscopy” in which a Laser beam is made to shine on the suspected sample and the amount of scattering of light is measured to find out the chemical compound present in it. The results obtained through this method of scanning are more accurate and consumes less time.
Disadvantage;
This type of spectroscopy does not hold good for determining low concentration of chemicals. But this can be easily tackled by mixing the sample with nano scale silver particles to amplify the signals.
Applications;
This method of scanning helps in giving idea for developing “Breathalyzers” that are used by roadside patrols in drugs testing. Scientists made sure that this technology will surely have a wide range of applications in the future including forensic science fields.
