According to NASA report, Global Warming is not the only reason for melting of Himalaya Glaciers. Locally released smoke - be it from your kitchens using wood fires or from your vehicles. Ganga river basins are also contributing for the faster melting of glaciers between April and September every year.
“Black carbon” produced by the burning of fossil fuels travels to colder areas and create a layer of warm air which in turn leads to faster melting of ice. According to Syed Iqbal Hussain, glaciologist at TERI, 17 percent of melting of glaciers is due to domestic pollution created by us known as black carbon. He also said that it can be controlled to a large extent easily if we strictly enforce emissions norms for our vehicles and introduce the low carbon diesel.
