6 Ways To Reduce Your Electric Bill

With the cost of BC Hydro on the rise, it’s no wonder homeowners and renters in Victoria BC are looking for ways to reduce their electric bill. Let Jaycox Electric help you with some tips on 6 ways to reduce your electric bill.

1. Stop Drawing Power When Your Not Using It

This is called phantom power and it can add up to hundreds of dollars per year. Unplug your chargers, turn off your computers and all the little electrical devices that draw power when you’re not using them.

2. Use LED’s

These are actually called light emitting diodes and yes, they seem expensive on initial purchase. However the savings per year will far outweigh the initial purchase price. And hopefully, over time, the price of LED’s will begin to come down.

3. Limit Power During Peak Power Times

Most residential power is used between 7am and 11pm, but for details, check your BC Hydro statement. During peak time electricity is more expensive. Whenever you can, use timers to set appliances like dishwashers and laundry machines to run outside of the peak hours.

4. Stop Leaking Taps

Leaking hot water can add up over the year to a significant amount because your hot water tank will be running constantly. The fix is a very inexpensive washer replacement for 10 cents or a new cartridge is about $7.

5. Use Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights

Everyone likes to have a little light on in their yard for safety at night, but leaving a light on all night every night can really add up. Instead, switch to a motion sensor light that only comes on when it senses movement. This alerts you when something is moving in your yard and lights the way only for you, without wasting any power. Win win. A Victoria electrical contractor can help with proper installment.

6. Wash Laundry in Cold Water Only

Detergents these days don’t need the heat to help clean your clothes and hot water wears your clothes out faster than cold. Turn off the hot water tap to your washer completely as you don’t need it. Bonus tip during the summer. Use a clothes hanger to dry your clothes.
