Additional Items You Should Keep In Your Toolbox

Twist Ties

Every once in a while, you need to temporarily hold something together before the final solution is implemented.  Twist ties or elastic bands can sometimes do the job as well.  Just be creative.

Sandwich Bags

If you need to take a quick break during a paint job, you can put any wet brush in one of these bags so the paint won’t drip or dry out while you are doing other things.

Mineral Oil

A good way to wipe down your stainless steel appliances is to wipe them down using mineral oil.  Their appearance afterwards will bring a smile to your face.

Miscellaneous Nuts and Bolts

Who doesn’t have a container full of unmatched nuts and bolts in the house?  To finish a new project, you will never know when you will need a spare nut or bolt.  Our house has had this container for countless years.

Twine

Just like twist ties, the need to tie a quick knot to hold something together is never ending. Another example would be a string.

Small Scrub Brush

A small scrub brush’s bristles are the perfect size for brushing away dust and fingerprints from hinges and other hardware after installation.  It can also be used to work on rust, dirt and grime.

Fork

An old fork works great for pulling thin nails out of a board or a wall. The space between the tines provides a better grip than the back of some claw hammers and most stainless steel versions are difficult to bend.

Spoon

Whether you have the need to stir a liquid or scoop something out, a spare spoon in the toolbox can be very handy.

Toothpicks

Most people know that wood shims are thin pieces of wood used to fill space or level an object and toothpicks make great small-scale shims. They’re just right for padding small spaces like a screw hole that’s become too big.

Drained Water Bottle

When needed, it can double as a level. Simply add enough water till you reach one of the ridges on the bottle and then set it on top of the object you want to make a level. If the water doesn’t line up with one of the lines, then the object isn’t straight.

Hand Held Dental Mirror

You should try it when you need to get a good look at hard-to-access spots.  The angle might be just what you are looking for.

Extension Cords

Keeping two or three of these around the house is a good idea as you never know when you will need one.  The examples are endless.

Spare Batteries

From the small size AAA to the larger size D, keeping a supply of batteries in the house will fill in any need in a pinch.

Screw Drivers

A screwdriver kit which has an assortment of interchangeable heads will help facilitate any job.  From regular to Phillips to hex to torx to clutch head and more, being prepared will make any job go smoother.
