Moving into your first apartment or new home can be the most exciting thing to happen in your life. It can also be a confusing and daunting task. If you’ve never furnished a home before, there are many small details that can be overlooked without a plan. While you have probably thought of the essentials like plates, pans and a bed, there are more items that make a home cozy and liveable. You’ll need some basic tools like a hammer and screwdriver as well as furniture for your new home.

Living Room

You’ll need space for friends and family to visit your new home. The beauty of having your own place is that you can invite people over to relax. You’ll need seating. An inviting couch and a few armchairs placed in a small grouping will help your guests relax and have conversations. If you’re working with a tight budget, you can shop thrift stores or flea markets. You can find incredibly unique pieces at flea markets.

Dining Room

For the dining room, you’ll need a table large enough to fit your guests. You can estimate between 6 and 8 guests at common sized tables. While dining sets can be quite expensive new at the store, you don’t need to buy them new. An older piece with mismatched chairs can be restored to make a beautiful table set. You can reupholster chairs easily with some fabric, a hammer and some nails. A matching rug can really tie the whole room together.

Bedroom

For your wonderful new bedroom, you’ll need a bed with a headboard. In some cases, you can make your own padded headboard with some foam, wood and material. If you create it yourself, you save money and create a unique piece that you can brag about to friends. You’ll need nightstands and good lighting in the bedroom too. The nightstands don’t have to match each other or the bed. Find pieces in the same color range or style to complement each other.

Kitchen

Aside from the dishes, pots and pans, the kitchen needs an eating nook. While you might not need a table if you have a dining room, you’ll need a place to have breakfast or drink your coffee or tea. If you don’t want to pay for a huge kitchen table, you could opt for a cafe table with two chairs. They are small enough to fit in the corner of a small kitchen. Don’t forget your kitchen appliances too. You’ll need a way to make that coffee or tea as well as a microwave and toaster.

Bathroom

While the bathroom doesn’t need large pieces of furniture, you might need extra storage. Storage racks can be installed behind the toilet, or free standing units can be placed outside the bathroom for towels, toiletries and supplies.
As you live in your new space, you’ll figure out what you need and what’s not really necessary for your lifestyle. All these items are essential for your space like the bed and the couch, but other items like pictures and rugs can be purchased later.
