Your new city will probably have plenty of options available, but fortunately, you can save a lot of money or at least hassle if you follow the below advice when it comes to your personal items.
Leave Hung-Up Clothes on Hangers
You most likely have a lot of clothes on hangers. Some may be ok to take down, fold up and pack away in a box. Jeans
and other pairs of pants are a good example. However, for things like sports coats, expensive dresses and jackets, you don’t want to put creases in it by folding or bunching it up.
Instead, just leave them on their hangers and take them as is. You can rest them across the top of your moving boxes (this is where picking the right moving supplies can make a big difference—more on that in a moment). Better still, though, is to hang them from the handles above the doors in your cars or invest in a wood dowel to place from one window to the other in the back. Just roll up your window so it grasps the dowel tight.
Lastly, throw a garbage bag over your garments so they stay nice and clean throughout the extent of your move.
Use Garbage Bags
Speaking of which, one of your best options for moving supplies is definitely going to be garbage bags. They’re perfect for packing up your bedding, which leaves you more room for the boxes you paid for (meaning you save on moving supplies). Most moving companies are great, but their trucks could be dirty or moist. Using garbage bags ensures that none of this affects your bedding and it’s ready to use as soon as you arrive.
You Have Other Stuff to Use Too
Other moving supplies for your move include your blankets and pillows. You might not have to put them in garbage bags if you use them for stuffing in your boxes. Help keep objects from shifting and moving around by packing them full of your softer materials. Of course, they’ll stay nice and safe inside too.
Another great option you have with you is the drawers in your dresser. You definitely want to remove them to make your move easier. However, don’t leave them empty. Either keep your clothes in them and cover the entire thing in plastic wrap or use this space for other things you’re moving. Both provide you with yet another method for saving money on your move.
Use Better Boxes
The last thing you want to do when you start unpacking in your new home is realizing that some of your most beloved personal items have been smashed or otherwise broken. With cardboard boxes, though, there’s a good chance that will happen. All it takes is the wrong impact or a slight fall for things to go badly. Of course, if they end up in a puddle or some other type of liquid, your items inside could be ruined.
