How To Remove Mold from Window Sills

Have you noticed, especially in areas with cold climates, that moulds often emerge on many indoor windows where window frames meet the glass? Occasionally, the moulds’colours complement with the color of the window, which makes them impossible to discern by untrained eyes. There are also times that the moulds are clearly visible but misinterpreted to be irrelevant. But, this is wrong as moulds present potential health concern due to air contamination. Moreover, accumulated moulds may affect your window’s condition and may require significant cleaning in the future.

So how do you remove the moulds from your window sills? Check out these five methods.

1. Inspect the Area

Start the process of getting rid of moulds on windows by determining the points where it grows. Study the frames and glass on each window carefully to ensure that you have an idea on the areas of where moulds exist.

2. Dry Clean

Start by wearing a respiratory mask and with a vacuum cleaner,  get rid of loose spores. Do this procedure if the windows are open to let mould particles have a way of escape. Gently and gradually run hose’s nozzle over the frames and glass, ensuring that you cover every part of the window. After completing this process, the nozzle of the vacuum must be cleaned using a cloth dampened with vinegar.

3. Wet Clean

If you are cleaning wet windows, then it’s advisable not to use a vacuum. So as an alternative, wear protective gloves and using a cloth dampened with lukewarm water, wipe clean the window panes and frames. At this period, your goal is to get rid of the excess moulds on the windows only. Avoid rubbing too hard on the windows so you won’t force the mould spores into the wood of the frame. And make sure to rinse the cloth regularly with clean water.

4. Eradicate Remaining Mould

For minor mould presence, spray a bit of white vinegar into the windows and let it be for a few minutes as you put baking soda on a piece of clean cloth. Use the cloth to remove the moulds as the soda acts as an abrasive while the vinegar will eliminate the spores. But if the problem is more widespread, you can use fungicide by diluting it with water according to its package instructions. And with a clean cloth, wipe the window glass and frames.

After the moulds are removed, use a piece of cloth to dry the surface and check it again to make sure that there is nothing left. However, if there are still mould traces, repeat the cleaning process.

5. Prevent Moisture Accumulation

You can avoid moulds from coming back by making sure the windows are condensation-free. This can be done by wiping condensation using a piece of dry cloth.

The steps above are recommended for minor mould presence; however, for widespread and tough to remove moulds, it is wise to seek the help of expert Calgary mold removal companies such as the Calgary Water & Flood Services Inc.
